Purpose – Why do I need to plan this?

This is the why principle for WHY you are planning what you’re about to plan. If you have an unclear focus on the task at hand, this usually solves the problem “Why am I even doing this?”

Envision – What does this look like?

This is a simple web search for either what the end product should look like, inspiring ideas or simply aspects of the entire project.

Brainstorm – What do I think should be included, What does planning look like, etc?

This is the collection stage. And here you will find yourself gathering every piece of data that correlates to your idea. Do not discriminate against ideas.

Organize – What order makes most sense?

This is where you are going to pick and choose what aspects of the Brainstorm section to keep and in what order they fall.

Next Actions – What steps do I need to take in order to build this?

This is where you’re going to define the hard next steps of the project and ensure it moves along.

Since it was first published almost fifteen years ago, David Allen’s Getting Things Done has become one of the most influential business books of its era, and the ultimate book on personal organization. “GTD” is now shorthand for an entire way of approaching professional and personal tasks, and has spawned an entire culture of websites, organizational tools, seminars, and offshoots.
